No, a PlayStation 4 version of God of War: Ascension is not a way to pay homage to a landmark series for Sony and is generally a bad idea. A throwaway backstory drained from the hollow soul of Kratos to keep him alive for just one more year so that his furious legacy doesn’t fade away into the impending demise of last generation’s consoles. An endless slew of “new versions” of games and sequels and prequels and “interquels” coming at us year after year, God of War: Ascension wasn’t even a game that most of us wanted in the first place. Those sales figures don’t represent the HD upconversions present on the PlayStation 3 for God of War, God of War 2, God of War: Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, but they’re significant enough to say that Ascension didn’t quite hit the mark when compared to its predecessors.įranchise fatigue is a very real thing, and God of War is a series that has been milked ’til Sony Santa Monica‘s teats were raw.

It’s a short jump from a game that literally came out last year to be refurbished for a new generation, but a very short history of the game entails that its sales were significantly less than expected and it’s the poorest selling God of War title only beating out God of War: Ghost of Sparta. God of War is an action franchise from Sony.
Yeah, we get it-the assets are there and ripe for the fixing for a modernized port of the title. Yet, there doesn’t seem to be any point to take the time and upconvert the game’s assets to be more in line with the power of the PlayStation 4. Even non-critics still enjoyed the title, ignoring the societal “warnings” offered prior to the game’s release, hailing it as a “refinement” of the series. Many people turned a blind eye to the title because of its “blatant misogyny,” but critics still found things to love in the game, offering favorable reviews for the most part. The possibility exists that there may be other goodies lying in wait tied to its release, but no matter what, it’s a dumb idea to even consider putting this game on the Sony‘s new platform.Īdmittedly, Ascension didn’t really get a fair chance, having been surrounded by controversy before its release regarding the name of a trophy. There’s a rumor going around that God of War: Ascension might be getting a PlayStation 4 release in the near future, with (at the very least) updated graphical assets. And going by more accurate NPD & GFK data we know this game is undertracked by at least 200K (50k 1st month US, 150K in EU by June 2013) so God of War: Ascension is actually around 2 million now.
